This article is about the infrastructure: what PayPal has built, how the pieces fit together, and what a merchant actually needs to take part.<\/p>\n<p>PayPal Agentic Commerce is PayPal's answer to the two things an AI assistant needs in order to sell your products: a catalog it can read, and a secure way to pay you.<\/p>\n<h2>What is PayPal Agentic Commerce?<\/h2>\n<p>PayPal Agentic Commerce is a set of services that connect a merchant's product catalog and payment flow to AI shopping assistants. PayPal launched its Agentic Commerce Services in October 2025 to let merchants sell inside AI-driven experiences rather than only on their own storefront.<\/p>\n<p>It rests on two components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Store Sync<\/strong> \u2014 makes your catalog discoverable to AI assistants by syncing your product feed to PayPal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Agent Ready<\/strong> \u2014 makes you shoppable, enabling checkout and payment directly inside the assistant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The distinction matters: being discoverable and being purchasable are two different levels of readiness, with different technical requirements. Most merchants start with the first and add the second when it makes sense.<\/p>\n<h2>Store Sync: making your catalog discoverable<\/h2>\n<p>Store Sync is the foundation. It takes your product feed \u2014 the structured file that lists your products with their titles, descriptions, prices, availability and images \u2014 and delivers it to PayPal in the format AI assistants expect. From there, when a shopper asks an assistant for a product, your items can be surfaced with accurate, up-to-date information.<\/p>\n<p>Two things make or break this layer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Feed quality.<\/strong> Assistants can only recommend what they can read. Titles must be descriptive, attributes complete, images compliant, prices and availability current. A thin or outdated feed simply won't surface well \u2014 the same discipline that governs Google Shopping and Performance Max applies here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Freshness.<\/strong> Prices and stock change constantly. A feed synced once and forgotten will show assistants the wrong information. Daily (or more frequent) synchronization is what keeps you accurately represented.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is why the catalog, not the payment, is the real bottleneck for most merchants. PayPal's Agentic Commerce Pulse Report (498 US merchants, February\u2013March 2026) found that nearly all merchants report at least partial visibility into AI-agent traffic, yet only about one in five have 80% or more of their catalog available as structured, machine-readable data. Closing that gap is a feed problem before it is a payments problem.<\/p>\n<h2>Agent Ready: checkout inside the assistant<\/h2>\n<p>Agent Ready is the second layer: it lets the shopper complete the purchase without leaving the AI interface. Introduced in early 2026 and expanding progressively, it lets merchants on Braintree (PayPal's enterprise payment gateway) accept payments from AI assistants \u2014 ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini \u2014 without building a separate integration for each surface. It brings PayPal's fraud detection, buyer protection, and dispute resolution to these new transactions.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, enabling in-assistant checkout requires the merchant to expose a small set of endpoints \u2014 a cart that the assistant can create, update and check out \u2014 and to process the payment through PayPal Orders v2 or Braintree. It is more involved than Store Sync, which is why many merchants treat it as a deliberate second step rather than a day-one requirement.<\/p>\n<h2>The protocols behind the scenes (in plain terms)<\/h2>\n<p>Agentic commerce runs on emerging open standards. You don't need to implement them yourself to understand the landscape:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)<\/strong> \u2014 an open standard for agent-initiated checkout, co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe and released in late September 2025. It defines how ChatGPT passes order details to a merchant's backend so the merchant can accept the order, charge through its own payment provider and remain the merchant of record. PayPal integrates with ACP: it processes payments for merchants selling through OpenAI's Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, and the PayPal wallet is available to shoppers as a checkout option.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)<\/strong> \u2014 Google's standard for making products discoverable and purchasable inside Google Search and the Gemini app. PayPal announced support for UCP in early 2026, making PayPal a checkout option within Google's AI shopping surfaces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Agent Payments Protocol (AP2)<\/strong> \u2014 Google's open standard for letting AI agents transact on a user's behalf, announced in September 2025 with a broad set of partners including PayPal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The takeaway: several standards are converging, and PayPal has positioned itself across them. For a merchant, the value of a service like PayPal Agentic Commerce is that it abstracts this complexity \u2014 you connect once rather than tracking each protocol.<\/p>\n<h2>What a merchant actually needs<\/h2>\n<p>To take part today, the essentials are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">a <strong>PayPal Business<\/strong> account;<\/li>\n<li>selling <strong>physical goods to US customers, in USD<\/strong> \u2014 the service is currently available on the US market;<\/li>\n<li>a <strong>product feed<\/strong> in the required format, delivered and kept in sync;<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">for in-assistant checkout, the <strong>Cart API<\/strong> endpoints and payment integration (Orders v2 or Braintree).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The feed is the part every merchant needs and the part that most often isn't ready. This is where a feed-management provider does the heavy lifting: formatting to PayPal's specification, secure delivery, daily updates and variant handling. PayPal notes that Store Sync availability can depend on whoever manages your product feed \u2014 so your feed management platform matters.<\/p>\n<h2>Why this matters now<\/h2>\n<p>Agentic commerce is early, but the direction is clear: AI agents read the same structured product data that already powers Google Shopping and Meta. Merchants with a clean, enriched, continuously updated feed are ready for these new surfaces. Those without one stay invisible \u2014 however good the product itself is.<\/p>\n<p>The practical first move is not a payments project.
